3 Reasons to Buy Custom Furniture
When you look at your living room or any other room in your house and you think to yourself, “You know, I really need something better for our media stand (or insert any other piece of furniture here)”, then it’s probably time to start thinking about buying some furniture. Wait! Before you run out to a massive furniture chain or start looking at online retailers, you may fair better by getting something custom built for you. Let’s discuss the benefits of buying custom instead.
Quality, Quality, Quality
Most of the furniture you buy in stores is made with very little wood, if any at all. Usually it consists of particle board that has a thin layer of wood veneer applied over the top. This gives it the appearance that it is made with real wood, but you now know that is not always the case.
Why should you care? If you want your furniture to last for many years to come, you should get furniture that is built to last. Most particle board furniture will eventually deteriorate if not properly cared for. Ever notice water rings or spots on a table that are swollen due to condensation? This is due to particle board. Granted, water rings can happen on normal wood too but are not as easy to form.

In addition, these are often mass produced in an assembly line style. That means quantity over quality which can result in less than acceptable craftsmanship. There is a reason why extended warranties are offered at checkout.
Most customer furniture makers will use a variety of solid woods and cabinet grade plywood in their builds. Their attention to detail when crafting each piece means that you will get a well assembled piece of furniture that will stand the test of time.
Get exactly what you want
You are you, and your style may not align with the style of pre-made furniture. You may also have certain space limitations which requires you have a specifically sized piece of furniture for your space.
You can get exactly want you want, in the exact color, style, and size you need. Most custom furniture makers will consult to understand your needs and design something around that. Often times, you have seen something you love in the store or online but just wish it was better quality or a different size or color. A custom furniture maker can make that happen for you.

Support your local woodworker
Depending on where you live, there are a handful, to a lot of furniture makers in your area. When you have something custom created for you, you are buying local and supporting these small-businesses in the community where you reside. Since you are dealing directly with them, there is a personal connection. It is not a mass-produced piece by someone far away or in another country that you will never meet.
You’ll often times make a great connection and have a resource for future projects.
Summary
Not all mass-produced furniture is made using less than standard craftsmanship or materials. There are some legitimate manufacturers who offer quality-built furniture. Like custom furniture, the prices will be higher than mass-produced pieces due to higher quality materials and for the increased labor of using solid joinery methods.
Also, if you are just looking for something temporary to fill a space that doesn’t cost a lot of money and you know you’ll replace it in a year or two, then mass-produced particle board furniture might be a great option for you.
But, if you want something built for your family that matches your style and home, support your local woodworkers and buy custom.
